Installing a sump system where a house has never had one costs $1,500 to $4,500, typically around $2,400. That is for breaking the basement floor, digging and lining a pit, setting a pump, and running a discharge line to somewhere the water is allowed to go.

The pump is the cheapest part of that. A good residential pump is $150 to $650. Nearly everything else you are paying for is concrete work, drainage design and a circuit. That table is the work itself. A permit, where one is required, adds $50 to $400, and in most jurisdictions one is required because the job touches both drainage and the electrical panel.

The two lines that move most are the exterior discharge and the circuit. A house where the panel is ten feet from the pit and the ground falls away from the foundation lands near the low column. A house where the panel is upstairs at the other end and the water has to be carried sixty feet to reach anywhere lower than the basement lands near the high one.

Check that a sump is the right fix first

A sump pump handles water that arrives from below, through the slab and the base of the walls, because the water table has risen above your floor. It is the right tool for that and only that.

It is the wrong tool for water that is arriving from above. If your basement takes water during rain but stays dry for weeks afterwards, the water is almost certainly coming off the roof and standing against the wall, and the fix is outside: gutters that are clear, downspouts that discharge ten feet out, and soil that slopes away. Where water genuinely comes up through the floor, the pit usually wants an interior perimeter drain feeding it, which is $50 to $120 per linear foot and is priced in French drain cost. A pit with no drain collects only the water that finds its own way to that one spot.

The pit is the straightforward part of this job. Deciding where several thousand gallons an hour are allowed to go is the part that sets the price.

Where the water is allowed to go

This is the part homeowners do not expect and installers argue about, and it is worth understanding before you take quotes.

Not into the sanitary sewer. Most jurisdictions prohibit it outright. Storm water in the sanitary system overloads the treatment plant, and the connection is a common code violation found at sale.

Not next to the foundation. Water discharged at the wall runs back down to the pit and the pump moves the same water in a loop until it burns out. Ten feet is the usual minimum and twenty is better.

Not onto the neighbour's lot. Redirecting your ground water onto adjoining property is actionable in most states, and it is the sort of thing that surfaces years later.

Somewhere lower, or into a dry well. The good outcome is a buried line that daylights on a downhill part of the lot. Where the lot is flat, that becomes a dry well, which is a gravel pit that lets the water soak away, and it adds $500 to $1,500.

The pit itself

A proper pit is 18 to 24 inches across and 24 to 36 inches deep, lined, and set on gravel so water enters through the sides rather than only the top. Undersized pits are the most common defect in a cheap installation: a small pit fills fast, so the pump starts and stops constantly, and short cycling is what kills pumps.

Fit an airtight cover. It cuts basement humidity noticeably, and an open sump is one of the main routes radon takes into a house, which matters if yours tests high. Radon mitigation cost covers that side of it.

The circuit

The pump wants its own GFCI-protected circuit, not a shared one and not an extension lead. A sump sharing a circuit with a chest freezer means one tripped breaker takes out both, and you learn about it days later through the smell.

Where the panel is close this is $300. Where it means fishing cable across a finished basement it is $800, and it is the line item most likely to differ between two quotes for the same job.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the installation take?

One day for the pit, the pump and the interior pipe. The exterior discharge run often takes a second day, and the concrete needs a few days before it is fully cured. Add a week or two at the front for the permit.

Do I need a permit?

Usually yes, because the work involves both a drainage connection and new electrical. It is worth having: the inspection catches an illegal sewer discharge before it becomes your problem at sale, and an unpermitted sump pump is something a buyer's inspector will find.

Can the discharge go into my floor drain?

Almost never, because in most houses the floor drain runs to the sanitary sewer. Ask your installer where that drain actually goes before agreeing to it. Getting this wrong is the single most common code failure in sump installations.

Will a sump pump make my basement dry?

It will keep standing water off the floor. It will not stop moisture coming through the walls, and it will not by itself make the space suitable for finishing. A wet basement usually needs the outside work, the drain and the pump together, which is the scope of Basement waterproofing cost.

Should I install the interior drain at the same time?

If you are cutting the floor anyway, yes. The slab is already open, the crew is already there, and adding it later means breaking the same concrete twice. It is the one upgrade that is genuinely cheaper bought now than bought later.
