Replacing a sump pump in a pit you already have costs $650 to $2,500, typically around $1,200. The pump itself is only $100 to $700 of that. The rest is labour, a new check valve, and the fittings at the pit that are usually as old as the pump you are taking out.
Do it on a Tuesday in April and it is a two-hour job at standard rates. Do it at two in the morning during the storm that killed it and you are paying $800 to $3,000 for the same pump, plus whatever the water reached first. The whole argument of this article is that the second situation is avoidable and the first one is cheap.

Signs the pump is going
- It runs, but the water level in the pit drops slowly or not at all
- It starts and stops rapidly, which is usually the float or the check valve
- It grinds or vibrates hard, which is usually the impeller
- It has become audibly louder than it used to be
- It ran continuously through a wet season
- It is more than about eight years old
Any one of those is worth acting on while the basement is dry. A pump replaced on your own schedule costs $1,200. The same pump replaced during the flood it failed to prevent costs two to three times that, before anything you own gets counted.
Choosing the replacement
1/3 horsepower suits most houses with a normal water table and a short discharge run.
1/2 horsepower is right for a high water table, a deep basement, or a long horizontal run to the discharge point.
3/4 horsepower is rarely needed in a house and is worth it only where the pump cycles frequently under real load.
Submersible pumps sit in the water at the bottom of the pit. They are quieter, they tolerate solids better, and they let the pit be covered, which keeps humidity and radon down. They last 7 to 10 years and they are the usual choice now.
Pedestal pumps carry the motor on a column above the pit. They cost less, they are easier to service, and they last 10 to 15 years because the motor stays dry. They are noticeably louder and the exposed motor is unwelcome in a basement anyone uses.
A cast iron body sheds heat better than plastic and outlasts it. On a pump that cycles often, the $50 to $150 difference is the easiest money in this article.
Match the switch to the pit as well as the pump. A vertical float needs less diameter than a tethered one, and a tethered float in a narrow pit hangs up against the wall, which is a failure that looks exactly like a dead pump.
The backup is the whole point
A sump pump's job is to run during heavy rain, and heavy rain is when the power fails. A primary pump with no backup is a system designed to be absent at the moment it is needed.
Battery backup, $350 to $1,800, is the standard answer. It gives roughly 5 to 12 hours of intermittent pumping, and less as the battery ages. The battery needs replacing every 3 to 5 years at $100 to $250, and that replacement is the maintenance nobody does. A backup with a five-year-old battery is decoration.
Water-powered backup, $400 to $1,200, uses mains pressure to drive an ejector and runs indefinitely with no power and no battery. It spends one to two gallons of city water for every gallon it moves. It needs mains pressure and a backflow preventer, some jurisdictions restrict it, and it does not work on a well.
A generator covers the pump along with the rest of the house, and it needs someone at home to start it unless it is a standby unit.
For a finished basement, or one holding the furnace and the water heater, a backup is not really optional. One flood costs many times the system.
Maintenance, which takes ten minutes
- Test it quarterly by pouring a bucket of water into the pit. It should start, clear the pit and stop.
- Check that the check valve is not leaking back, which makes the pump move the same water repeatedly.
- Clear silt and gravel from the pit once a year.
- Check the outside discharge is not blocked, buried or frozen.
- Test the backup separately and replace its battery on schedule.
- Listen. A pump that has become louder, or that runs longer than it used to, is telling you something.
A pump nobody has tested in three years is a pump of unknown status, and a storm is an expensive way to find out.

How long does a sump pump last?
Seven to ten years for a submersible, ten to fifteen for a pedestal. A pump in a basement with a high water table that cycles several times an hour will not reach the low end of either range.
Can I replace it myself?
In an existing pit, realistically yes: unplug it, unbolt the discharge union, lift it out, reverse the process, set the float height and test it. Budget an afternoon and buy a new check valve while you are there. The parts of this job that need a professional are the ones this article does not cover.
Should I replace it before it fails?
If it is over eight years old and the basement is finished, yes. The replacement costs the same either way; what changes is whether you also pay emergency rates and for water damage. This is the rare piece of home maintenance where the arithmetic is not close.
Does homeowners insurance cover a sump pump failure?
Not on a standard policy. Water backup and sump overflow is a separate endorsement, typically $50 to $250 a year. A house with a sump pump is a house that takes water, which makes the endorsement worth its price.
Why does my pump run constantly?
A genuinely high water table, a failed check valve letting the same water fall back in, a pit too small for the inflow, or a leak feeding it. Constant cycling destroys pumps quickly, so it is worth diagnosing rather than tolerating. Start with the check valve, which is the cheapest of the four to rule out.
