The requirements that are not optional
A GFCI disconnect within sight of the tub, between 5 and 50 feet away, and not closer than 5 feet to the water. This is a weatherproof box with a switch and a GFCI breaker, and it is what lets someone cut power without going to the house panel.
GFCI protection on the whole circuit. Not optional, not negotiable, and the reason is obvious.
Bonding. All metal within 5 feet of the tub — the frame, ladders, railings, rebar in a concrete pad, nearby metal fencing — connected together with a bonding conductor so nothing can sit at a different potential. This is the requirement most often skipped in unpermitted installations.
Correct burial depth for the feeder, 18 to 24 inches depending on wiring method.

A permit and an inspection. This is one of the installations where the inspection genuinely matters, and where an insurer will ask if something happens.
120V or 240V
Plug-and-play tubs run on a standard 120V 20 amp GFCI outlet. They are cheaper to set up, and they heat slowly, cannot run the heater and the jets at full power at the same time, and struggle in cold weather. They suit a small tub in a mild climate.
240V tubs at 50 amps are what most full-size hot tubs need. They heat while the jets run and they hold temperature in winter. This is the installation this page is about.
Check the tub's requirement before wiring anything. Some need 40 amps, some 50, some 60, and a few large swim spas want two circuits. Wiring a 50 amp circuit for a tub that needs 60 means doing it twice.
What people underestimate
Distance from the panel. The cost is dominated by the run. A tub on a deck against the house is a short job; one at the bottom of the garden is trenching, conduit and a larger conductor for voltage drop.
Panel capacity. A 50 amp continuous load is significant. On a 100 amp service with electric heating or an EV charger already fitted, there may not be room, and that turns a $1,300 job into a $6,000 one. A load calculation answers it before you buy the tub.
The pad. Not electrical, and it needs to exist before the tub arrives: a filled hot tub weighs 3,000 to 6,000 pounds. Concrete, a purpose-made pad, or a deck engineered for it.
Running cost. A well-insulated tub with a good cover costs $30 to $70 a month to run in a moderate climate, and more in a cold one. The cover is what decides it, and it is worth replacing when it waterlogs.

Can I wire it myself?
In some jurisdictions a homeowner may with a permit. This is one where the argument against is strong: it is 240 volts, outdoors, next to water, with specific bonding requirements that are easy to get wrong and invisible afterwards.
Do I really need the disconnect box?
Yes. It is required, it is inspected, and its purpose is that someone can cut power without walking through water to a panel in a basement.
Can I plug a hot tub into a dryer outlet?
No. It is a different circuit configuration, it is not GFCI protected, and it is not weather rated. Tubs need a dedicated circuit.
What if my panel is full?
A subpanel adds spaces for $600 to $2,000 if the service has capacity. If it does not, it is a service upgrade. Get the load calculation before buying the tub rather than after it is on the driveway.
Does an inflatable tub need any of this?
Inflatable tubs run on 120V and plug into a GFCI outlet. They still want a dedicated circuit rather than sharing with the garage freezer, and an outdoor-rated in-use cover on the outlet.
