Cost Home Book is written and edited by the Cost Home Book editorial team. The team builds the site's cost models from publicly available US wage statistics, supplier price lists and permit data, and updates each guide as those sources change. It has no affiliation with any contractor, manufacturer or lead-generation service. Figures on this site are estimates for reading a quote, not quotes.
How the figures are built
Every cost band starts as a national figure with a date on it. Where a guide is priced from published data, the labor leg follows the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey for the trade that does the work, and the materials leg follows a Producer Price Index series for what it is made of. Once a guide's sources section is published, both are named and linked at its foot, with the release they were read from.
The one number no dataset supplies is how much of a job is labor and how much is materials. That split is a judgement, it is stated on the page, and it is the difference between a roof price that moves with roofers' wages and one that moves with asphalt. How we calculate costs sets out the arithmetic, and the editorial policy is explicit about which figures are derived and which are estimates.

Air conditioner repair cost$150 to $3,500per projectMost air conditioner repairs cost $150 to $650. The expensive ones, a compressor or an evaporator coil, are the point at which you stop repairing and start pricing a replacement.
Roof replacement cost by house size$5,100 to $29,000per projectA 1,500 square foot house needs about 18.8 squares of roof and costs around $10,450 to re-roof in architectural asphalt. Your roof is larger than your floor area, and the pitch decides by how much.
Roof replacement cost by state$9,300 to $13,650per projectThe same 20 square asphalt roof costs about $9,300 in Arkansas and $13,650 in Alaska. The gap is almost entirely what an hour of skilled labor costs in each state.
Metal roof cost$11,000 to $60,000per projectA standing seam metal roof runs about $27,000 on a typical house, roughly two and a half times an asphalt roof. Most of the premium is labor, not material.
Flat roof replacement cost$4,500 to $28,000per projectReplacing a 1,500 square foot flat roof in TPO or EPDM costs $8,000 to $13,000. Whether the roof still drains decides if that is the whole job or the start of one.
Roof repair cost$150 to $5,000per projectMost roof repairs cost $150 to $600. The minimum service call is $150 to $350 whether the fix takes twenty minutes or four hours, which is what makes small repairs feel expensive.
Does insurance cover a roof replacement$1,000 to $10,000per projectInsurance covers a roof that was damaged, not one that wore out. What you pay is your deductible, plus the depreciation gap if your policy settles at actual cash value.
Kitchen remodel cost$15,000 to $80,000per projectA midrange kitchen remodel runs most homeowners $20,000 to $40,000. Whether you move plumbing and gas lines is the fork in the road that separates a mid-range job from a major one.
Roof replacement cost$6,700 to $32,000per projectMost homeowners pay between $7,500 and $14,000 to replace an asphalt shingle roof on a typical single-family house. Size, pitch and how many old layers have to come off drive nearly all of the spread.
Water heater replacement cost$850 to $6,500per projectReplacing a standard tank water heater costs most homeowners $1,300 to $2,600 installed. Switching fuel type or moving to tankless is what pushes the number past that.
