Whether it is worth it depends on how far the fixture is from the heater, and whether you value the wait or the water more.

The two ways it is plumbed

A dedicated return line runs from the furthest fixture back to the water heater. Hot water circulates in a proper loop, the cold line stays cold, and it works perfectly. It is standard in new construction and expensive to retrofit, because somebody has to run a pipe through a finished house.

A comfort valve avoids that. A crossover valve fits under the sink at the far fixture and lets cooled hot water pass into the cold line, which becomes the return path. The pump sits at the heater. It costs a third as much and installs in two hours.

The trade-off with a comfort valve is that the cold line at that fixture runs lukewarm for a while after the pump has run. In a bathroom that is a minor annoyance. At a kitchen tap where you want cold drinking water, it is more than minor.

The control is what matters

Running a recirculation pump continuously is the default setting and the wrong one. It keeps the entire loop hot all day, which means the water heater reheats water nobody used, all night, every night. That is the $50 to $200 a year row and it is pure waste.

Three better options:

A timer, set to the hours the household actually showers. Cheap, effective, and it does nothing at 3pm on a Tuesday when someone is home.

A thermostat, which only runs the pump when the loop temperature drops below a setpoint. Better than a timer alone and usually combined with one.

On demand, a button or motion sensor at the fixture that runs the pump for the 90 seconds before you get in the shower. This is the efficient answer: it uses almost no energy, wastes no water, and costs a few seconds of forethought.

If you fit one of these, fit a demand control. Continuous operation turns a water-saving device into an energy-wasting one.

Whether it is worth it

Worth it when:

  • The furthest fixture takes more than about 45 seconds to run hot
  • The house has a long horizontal run to a distant bathroom or an addition
  • You are in a drought-restricted area where the wasted water matters
  • The pipe is already looped, or the house is being renovated with walls open

Not worth it when:

  • Everything runs hot within 20 seconds
  • The heater is a tankless unit with a cold-water sandwich problem, which recirculation can make worse without a compatible model and buffer tank
  • The only pipe route would need a comfort valve at a kitchen tap you drink from

How much water does it actually save?

A 50 foot run of 3/4 inch pipe holds about a gallon and a half. A household running hot water eight times a day wastes roughly 10 to 12 gallons a day waiting, which is 3,000 to 4,000 gallons a year. Real, and worth more in some places than others.

Does it work with a tankless heater?

Only with a model designed for it. A standard tankless needs a minimum flow to fire, and a recirculation loop can cycle it repeatedly, which is hard on the unit. Several manufacturers make tankless heaters with a built-in recirculation pump and buffer tank; those work well.

Will it increase my gas bill?

If you run it continuously, yes, noticeably. With a demand control, barely measurably. This is entirely a question of how it is controlled.

Can I install one myself?

A comfort valve system is within reach for a competent DIYer: a valve under a sink, a pump on the heater outlet, and a socket. A dedicated return line in a finished house is not.

Does it make the pipes noisy?

A correctly sized pump is nearly silent. Noise usually means the pump is oversized for the loop or is mounted rigidly against a joist. Both are fixable.
