Replacing a blower motor costs $400 to $1,100 for a standard PSC motor and $600 to $1,800 for a variable-speed ECM. The blower is the fan that pushes air through the ducts, and it runs in both heating and cooling, so it accumulates more hours than anything else in the system.

It is one of the failures where the diagnosis matters, because a blower that will not start is a motor about a third of the time and a capacitor, a control board or a limit switch the rest.

The symptoms and what they usually mean

Nothing happens at all. Check the breaker and the furnace door switch first, then the capacitor. A blower motor that hums but does not turn is very often a $200 capacitor rather than a $700 motor.

It runs but the airflow is weak. More often a blocked filter, a closed damper or a blower wheel packed with dust than a failing motor. A dirty wheel can cut airflow by a third, and cleaning it costs a fraction of replacing anything.

It squeals or screeches. Bearings on an older PSC motor, or a belt on a very old unit. Bearings are not serviceable on modern motors; that is a replacement.

It rumbles or vibrates. Usually the blower wheel, unbalanced by uneven dust or a missing balance weight, rather than the motor.

It runs constantly. Check the thermostat is on "auto" rather than "fan on" before anything else. This is the most common non-fault we see described as a fault.

It overheats and cuts out after twenty minutes. A motor drawing too much current, usually because airflow is restricted. Fix the restriction or the new motor does the same thing.

PSC or ECM, and why the price differs

Older systems use a PSC motor: a simple single-speed induction motor, cheap and replaceable in an hour.

Systems from roughly 2010 onward increasingly use an ECM, an electronically commutated motor with a control module that varies speed. It uses substantially less electricity, particularly when running continuously for circulation, and it is what makes variable-speed comfort features work.

The catch is cost and complexity. On many ECMs the motor and its module are separate parts, and the module alone fails often. A contractor who quotes you a complete assembly should be asked whether the module alone would do.

Fitting a cheap PSC motor into a system designed around an ECM is possible on some equipment and is a downgrade: you lose the variable speed, the efficiency and usually the dehumidification behaviour.

Whether it is worth it

A blower motor on a system under twelve years old is a straightforward repair.

Past fifteen, weigh it. An $11,000 changeout over fifteen years is about $733 a year. A $900 blower motor that buys five more years is $180 a year and clearly worth doing. The same motor on a nineteen year old furnace that might give two more years is $450 a year and marginal.

The tiebreaker is usually whether anything else has failed recently. A blower motor as the third repair in two seasons is not really a blower motor decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a blower motor myself?

On an older furnace with a PSC motor, mechanically it is not complicated. Two things argue against it: the wiring on a multi-speed motor is easy to get wrong in a way that overheats it, and gas furnaces have safety interlocks that punish improvisation. ECM motors need the correct programmed module and are not a general-purpose part.

Why does my blower run after the furnace shuts off?

That is normal and deliberate. The blower keeps running to pull the remaining heat out of the exchanger, typically for 60 to 120 seconds. A blower that runs for ten minutes afterwards points at a limit switch or a control board.

How long should a blower motor last?

Ten to twenty years. Running the fan continuously for air circulation shortens it, though an ECM handles continuous running far better than a PSC does.

Does a dirty filter kill blower motors?

Over time, yes. Restricted airflow makes the motor work harder and run hotter, and heat is what ends motors. It is the cheapest maintenance in the house.

The technician wants to replace the whole blower assembly. Is that necessary?

Sometimes: a seized motor often takes the wheel with it, and on some equipment the parts are only sold together. Ask specifically whether the motor alone, or the ECM module alone, is available for your model. It is worth the question.
