Recharging an air conditioner costs $250 to $750 on a modern R-410A system and $600 to $2,000 on an older R-22 one. But the number that matters is not the recharge. It is that an air conditioner does not consume refrigerant, so if yours is low, it is leaking, and refilling it without finding the leak is buying the same gas twice.

A residential system holds roughly 5 to 12 pounds depending on size and lineset length, so a full charge is not a top-up.
Why the refrigerant type decides everything
R-22 was phased out of production in the United States at the end of 2019. Existing stock and reclaimed gas are all that remain, and the price reflects that. A system running R-22 is at minimum fifteen years old, and putting $1,500 of gas into it buys perhaps three more seasons on equipment that owes you nothing.
If a contractor tells you an R-22 system needs refrigerant, that is a replacement conversation, not a repair one.
R-410A is what most systems installed between about 2005 and 2024 use. It is readily available and reasonably priced.
R-454B and R-32 are the low-global-warming refrigerants replacing R-410A in new equipment from 2025. They are mildly flammable, which changes handling rules but not much about the homeowner's experience. If you are buying a new system now, this is what it will use.

The leak is the job
A sealed refrigerant loop that has lost charge has a hole in it. The common locations, roughly in order:
- Schrader valve cores, the service ports. Cheapest possible fix, sometimes a $15 part.
- Brazed joints at the outdoor unit or the lineset connections. A few hundred dollars if reachable.
- The evaporator coil, especially formicary corrosion on coils from the mid 2000s to mid 2010s. This is the expensive one, and on an out-of-warranty system it is usually the point at which you price a replacement.
- The lineset, particularly where it passes through a wall or was damaged during a previous job.
A proper diagnosis means pressure testing with nitrogen or tracing with electronic detection or UV dye, not "it was low so I topped it up".
What "topping it up" actually costs you
A system running low on refrigerant does not simply cool a bit less. It runs the compressor hot and under-lubricated, because the refrigerant carries the oil around the loop. Repeated top-ups are the reliable way to turn a $400 leak repair into a $2,400 compressor.
It is also illegal for a technician to knowingly add refrigerant to a system with a known leak without repairing it, under EPA Section 608, on systems above a certain charge size. A contractor who offers to keep topping you up each season is telling you something about how they work.
Frequently asked questions
How often should an air conditioner need refrigerant?
Never. It is a sealed system. A correctly installed unit should hold its charge for its whole life. "It needs a top-up every couple of years" is a description of a leak.
Can I recharge it myself with a kit from the hardware store?
Not legally for a split system, and not sensibly. Handling refrigerant requires EPA Section 608 certification. The kits sold for car air conditioning are not for household systems, and overcharging damages the compressor as reliably as undercharging does.
My AC is blowing warm and the lines are frozen. Is it low on refrigerant?
Possibly, but check the filter first. Restricted airflow freezes an evaporator coil far more often than low charge does. Turn the system off, set the fan to on, let it thaw for a few hours, and change the filter. If it freezes again with a clean filter, call someone.
Is the leak covered by warranty?
The part might be. Most manufacturers warrant the evaporator coil for five to ten years to the original owner if the system was registered. Labour is almost never included, and a coil replacement is mostly labour. Find your registration before you call.
Should I convert an R-22 system to R-410A?
No. It requires new refrigerant, new oil, usually a new metering device and often a new coil and lineset, and you end up with an old outdoor unit running a refrigerant it was not designed for. The money belongs in a new system.
