Hang a plumb line from the top of the wall and measure the gap at the widest point. That number, tracked monthly, is what an engineer most wants to see.

What is actually happening

A basement wall bows inward because the soil outside is pushing it. That pressure comes from water in the soil, from expansive clay swelling, from frost, or from a vehicle or fill loaded too close to the wall.

The wall cracks horizontally, usually about a third to halfway up, and the top pushes in. In block walls the joints step. In poured walls it is a single horizontal crack.

A horizontal crack in a basement wall is the serious one. Vertical hairline cracks are shrinkage; horizontal cracks are pressure, and they get worse.

The soil pressure that caused it is still there after any repair. Which is why the drainage outside is part of the job, not an optional extra.

The three methods

Carbon fibre straps are bonded to the inside face with epoxy, floor to ceiling. They are immensely strong in tension and they stop further inward movement. They are flat against the wall, so the basement stays usable and can be finished over them. They do not straighten anything, and they need the wall to be structurally intact to bond to.

Best for: walls that have moved up to about two inches, in a basement you want to finish.

Steel I-beams are set against the wall and fixed to the floor and the floor joists above. Cheaper, and they project four to six inches into the room. Some systems can be tightened over time to gradually push the wall back.

Best for: budget, and where the basement is unfinished and staying that way.

Wall anchors are steel plates on the inside connected by rods to plates buried in the soil outside, ten to fifteen feet away. Tightening the rods can straighten the wall over months. They need exterior excavation and enough garden to reach the anchor position.

Best for: walls that have moved significantly, where straightening matters, and where there is room outside to dig.

When none of them are enough

Movement over about three to four inches, or a wall that has sheared at the joints, is usually past bracing. That is a rebuild at $500 to $1,200 a linear foot.

A wall that is failing at the top, where it meets the joists, is a different problem.

Any of this without addressing the water is a repair on a timer. Downspouts, grading, and often a perimeter drain go with the bracing.

Get an engineer before choosing. The measurement that decides between these methods is the amount of deflection, and it should be measured with a plumb line rather than estimated by the company selling the straps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install carbon fibre straps myself?

Kits are sold and the epoxy work is not the hard part. The judgement is: how many, where, and whether bracing is the right answer at all. Insurers and buyers' inspectors also tend to want documentation from a contractor with an engineer's specification.

Will it straighten my wall?

Carbon fibre and fixed steel beams stop further movement; they do not straighten. Adjustable beams and wall anchors can, gradually, over months. A wall that stays bowed but stable is a legitimate outcome and is what most repairs produce.

How do I measure the bow?

Hang a plumb line from the top of the wall and measure the gap at the widest point. Record it with the date and repeat monthly. That number, tracked over a wet and a dry season, is what an engineer most wants to see.

Does it come up when selling?

Yes, and documented, engineered repairs with a warranty are far better received than an un-repaired horizontal crack. Keep the engineer's report and the contractor's warranty together.

Is a horizontal crack always serious?

It is always worth measuring and monitoring. A hairline horizontal crack in an old wall that has not moved in twenty years is different from one that appeared last spring. The plumb line and the monthly measurement tell you which you have.
