A residential solar system costs $2.50 to $4.00 a watt installed before incentives, so a typical 8 kW system is $20,000 to $32,000. The 30% federal tax credit brings that to $14,000 to $22,400, and state and utility incentives can take it lower.

Payback runs seven to fifteen years in most of the country, and the two things that decide where you land are your electricity rate and what your utility pays for exported power.

If the roof is more than about ten years old, replace it before the panels go on. It is irritating and it is much cheaper than the alternative.

What actually decides the payback

Your electricity rate. Solar competes against what you currently pay. At 12 cents a kilowatt hour the maths is slow; at 30 cents it is fast. This single number matters more than sunshine.

Net metering rules. What the utility credits you for power you export decides whether the system is worth sizing to cover your whole usage. Full retail net metering makes a large system sensible. Wholesale-rate export, which more states are moving to, makes a smaller system sized to your daytime use the better answer, and makes a battery more interesting.

Roof orientation and shade. South-facing is best in the northern hemisphere; east and west are perhaps 15 to 20% worse and still viable. Shade is the real killer, and a single shaded panel in a string system drags the whole string down, which is what microinverters and optimisers exist to fix.

Incentives. The 30% federal residential clean energy credit runs through 2032, then 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034. It is a credit against tax owed and it carries forward. Many states, utilities and municipalities add their own.

Own, loan or lease

Cash purchase gives the best return and the full tax credit, and it is $20,000 to $32,000.

A solar loan keeps the credit with you and spreads the cost. Watch for loans priced with a large dealer fee built into the system price; the same system quoted cash and financed often differs by 15 to 30%. Ask for the cash price.

A lease or power purchase agreement means no upfront cost, and the company takes the tax credit and owns the system. The savings are smaller, the contract runs 20 to 25 years, and it complicates selling the house because the buyer must assume the agreement. Read the escalator clause, which raises what you pay each year.

For most households that intend to stay, buying is meaningfully better than leasing.

Frequently asked questions

Will solar work on my roof?

Most roofs work. What rules it out is heavy shade, a roof at the end of its life, a structure that cannot carry the load, or a roof area too small for a useful array. Aspect matters less than people expect.

Do panels work in cold or cloudy climates?

Yes. Panels are more efficient in cold weather, and cloudy regions produce less but not nothing. Germany has a large installed base at a latitude north of most of the United States.

Is a battery worth it?

For backup during outages, often yes, and it is expensive per kilowatt hour. For economics alone it depends on the export rate and on time-of-use pricing. If your utility pays retail for exports, the grid is already a cheaper battery.

What maintenance do panels need?

Very little. Rain handles most cleaning; in dusty or pollen-heavy regions an occasional rinse helps. The inverter is the component that fails, typically at 10 to 15 years for a string inverter, and it costs $1,000 to $3,000 to replace.

Does solar increase the value of the house?

Owned systems generally do, and appraisers increasingly account for them. Leased systems generally do not and can complicate a sale. That difference is one of the stronger arguments for buying.
