The box is the whole safety question
An ordinary ceiling outlet box holds a light fixture: a few pounds, hanging still. A ceiling fan is 15 to 50 pounds and it vibrates continuously.
A fan-rated box is marked as such, is fixed to a joist or to a brace bar spanning between joists, and is tested for the dynamic load. Anything else, including a plastic box screwed to a piece of strapping, is not adequate however solid it feels on the day.
Retrofitting one without opening the ceiling is possible with an expanding brace bar fitted through the existing hole, which is the standard method and costs $200 to $500.
If a quote to replace a light with a fan does not mention the box, ask about it. It is the difference between a legitimate installation and one that works until it does not.

Blade height should be 7 to 9 feet above the floor, and the fan should sit at least 18 inches from the nearest wall, ideally 24. On an 8 foot ceiling that means a flush or hugger mount; on a 9 foot ceiling a 6 inch downrod; on anything higher a longer downrod to bring it into the 8 to 9 foot range.
A fan mounted too close to a high ceiling moves almost no air, which is the most common reason people say a fan does not work.
Which direction, and why it actually matters
Summer, counterclockwise looking up. Air is pushed straight down and the breeze across skin makes a room feel three to four degrees cooler. That lets the thermostat go up a few degrees, which is the whole energy argument.
Winter, clockwise on low. Air is drawn up the middle and pushed down the walls, which returns the warm air that has collected at the ceiling without creating a draught. It is worth doing in a room with high ceilings and worth very little in one with 8 foot ceilings.
A fan cools people, not rooms. Running one in an empty room costs electricity and does nothing, which is the opposite of how most households use them.

Can I install a ceiling fan myself?
Replacing an existing fan where the box is already fan-rated is a realistic DIY job. The two things that matter are confirming the box is rated, which is stamped on it, and assembling the blades and balancing them properly. Anything involving new wiring or a new box is an electrician.
Why does my fan wobble?
Usually an unbalanced blade set or a loose mounting. Check every blade screw and the downrod set screws first, then use the balancing kit that came with it. A wobble is almost never dangerous on a properly mounted fan and it is always irritating.
Do DC motor fans justify the price?
They use roughly 60 to 70% less electricity, run noticeably quieter, and offer more speed settings. They cost $150 to $400 more. In a bedroom fan that runs eight hours a night, the quietness is usually what people value rather than the saving.
Can I put a fan on a sloped ceiling?
Yes, with a sloped ceiling adapter and a downrod. Most fans include an adapter rated to a certain pitch; steeper ceilings need a specific kit.
Is a fan worth it with air conditioning?
Yes, and they work together. A fan lets the thermostat sit two to four degrees higher for the same comfort, and a fan costs a fraction of what compressor running time does.
