Adding an electrical outlet costs $140 to $350, with most jobs around $230. Replacing an existing one is $120 to $250. A GFCI outlet is $200 to $400, and an outdoor outlet is $250 to $600.

Nearly all of that is the visit. The device costs $3 to $25 and the work takes half an hour. This is why adding one outlet feels absurd and adding six at once feels reasonable, and why the practical advice is always the same: make a list and do them together.

That last row is the point. Six outlets separately is $840 to $2,100. Together it is $600 to $1,300, because the call-out and the setup happen once.

What makes one outlet cost more than another

Whether a circuit already reaches it. Adding an outlet to an existing circuit in the same room is fast. Running a new circuit from the panel is a different job with a different price.

Finished walls. Fishing cable through an insulated exterior wall, or up from a basement to a second floor, is most of the labour. An unfinished basement or garage is far cheaper.

Circuit capacity. An electrician will not add outlets to a circuit already loaded. If yours is full, the answer is a new circuit, and the price steps up.

Code requirements at the location. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, laundry rooms and anywhere outdoors require GFCI protection. Most habitable rooms now require arc-fault protection too. These are not upsells; they are what the inspector checks.

Old wiring. If the existing circuit has no ground conductor, a three-prong outlet cannot legally be fitted unless it is a GFCI labelled "no equipment ground". An electrician finding this on a house from the 1950s is not inventing work.

GFCI and AFCI, plainly

GFCI compares the current going out with the current coming back. If some is leaking, likely through a person, it cuts in milliseconds. It is required wherever water is plausible. Test it monthly with the button; they do fail, and a failed GFCI often still passes power.

AFCI detects the signature of an arcing connection, which is the failure that starts electrical fires inside walls. Required on most habitable-room circuits in current code. It usually lives in the breaker rather than the outlet.

Dual-function devices do both, and are what a modern kitchen or laundry circuit typically gets.

If a quote for a simple outlet includes a GFCI you did not ask for, ask why. The answer is usually the location, and it is usually correct.

Where the code wants outlets

Useful when planning a room, and useful for spotting what a house is missing:

  • No point along a wall more than 6 feet from an outlet, so roughly every 12 feet
  • Any wall section 2 feet wide or more gets one
  • Kitchen counters: no point more than 2 feet from an outlet, and islands need at least one
  • Bathrooms: at least one within 3 feet of the basin, GFCI protected
  • Outdoors: at least one at the front and one at the back, GFCI protected and in a weatherproof in-use cover
  • Laundry, garage and basement: at least one, GFCI protected

A house that falls well short of these was probably wired before the requirements existed, which is worth knowing as a general signal about its electrical age.

Doing it yourself

Replacing a like-for-like outlet on a circuit you have switched off and tested is a reasonable homeowner job, and it is legal in most places. Two rules that are not negotiable:

Turn off the breaker and then verify with a non-contact tester, because breaker labels are wrong more often than anyone expects. And do not fit a three-prong outlet where there is no ground conductor.

Adding a new outlet, extending a circuit, or anything inside the panel is electrician work. The saving is $150 and the failure mode is a fire behind a wall several years later.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one outlet cost $230 when the part is $5?

Because you are buying an hour of a licensed, insured tradesperson's day including the drive, not a piece of plastic. It is also why the sixth outlet in the same visit costs perhaps $80.

My outlet is warm. Is that a problem?

Yes, and it is urgent. A warm outlet means a loose connection or an overloaded circuit, both of which cause fires. Stop using it, turn off the breaker, and call someone.

Can I add an outlet by wiring off the one next to it?

Sometimes, and it is how most outlets are added. Whether the existing circuit can carry it is the question, and that depends on what else is on it. This is the judgement an electrician is applying when they say yes or no.

Do outlets wear out?

Yes. The contacts lose grip after twenty to thirty years and a plug that falls out under its own weight is a real hazard. Replacing tired outlets throughout an older house is cheap insurance at $120 to $250 each, less in bulk.

What is the difference between 15 and 20 amp outlets?

A 20 amp outlet has a T-shaped slot and belongs on a 20 amp circuit with 12 gauge wire. Fitting one on a 15 amp circuit invites someone to plug in a load the wiring cannot carry. It is a common and dangerous DIY error.
